Supramalleolar orthoses (SMOs) are commonly prescribed devices for young children who present with benign hypertonia and excessive pronation, or flexible pes planus. Flexible pes planus is one of the most common deformities in young children. It can be described as “generalized ligamentous laxity in the foot… in which the foot has an abnormally low or absent arch. The heel shows excessive eversion during weight bearing, and the forefoot is usually abducted producing a midfoot sag with lowering of the longitudinal arch, so that the talar head and navicular tuberosity appear to be in contact with the floor and to participate excessively in weight bearing.
INDICATIONS:
• Significant forefoot, mid-foot, and subtalar instability
• Global foot deviations due to low or high tone
• Foot deviations that interfere with stance and balance
• Young children with significant foot instability that need free dorsiflexion and plantar flexion for crawling, pulling to stand, and squattin
